Jun 24, 2022

Looking for some inspiration for days out without breaking the bank?

Tillers Cottage is ideally situated to access so many places of interest to suit the whole family, no matter what their age or interest. Even better when those activities are free! Read on to find out some of our suggestions.

Scarborough North and South Bays

With two sweeping sandy bays, you're spoilt for choice where to spend the day. Children and adults love a day at the beach! Explore the rock pools, build spectacular sand sculptures, paddle in the sea, relax and read a book or simply people watch!

Of course, there are also so many more activities you can do in Scarborough. Take a walk to the beautiful Peasholm Park, a trip up Oliver's Mount for the best views, find the Freddie Gilory and the Belsen Stragglers and Diving Belle sculptures or enjoy the Esplanade Gardens. All easily accessible and great fun for all!

Ebberston Village playgound and tennis court

Ebberston village has a wonderful playground made up of slides, tunnels, swings and lots of wooden equipment.

Show off your tennis skills on the well maintained court - if you haven't got a partner, no worries, as there's a hitting wall too. Take a ball along and enjoy a game of cricket or football on the grassy area, or simply relax with a picnic!

An added bonus is that there are toilets there too!

Chafer Wood Nature Reserve.

Just a five minute walk from the doorstep, you'll find the beautiful Chafer Wood Nature Reserve. Stunning scenery, a range of wildlife and plenty of places to explore, Chafer Wood is a hit with all of our visitors. See where King Alfred laid wounded after battle, build a den or just enjoy a walk through the woods.

Dalby Forest

Dalby Forest is just a 15 minute drive from Tillers Cottage. Our annual Accomodation Pass means you can park your car for free. The forest is the perfect playground for fun.

There are numerous walking and biking trails, varying in length and difficulty - some are pram friendly. Hunt out the Gruffalo, play in the various play parks or paddle in the streams.

At Dalby Forest, you'll also find Go Ape - obvioulsy, this is not free, but having the accommodation pass does mean guests can get a discounted rates off tickets.

Walking with some geocaching along the way

Tillers Cottage is ideally located as a gateway to the North York Moors. From Tillers, you can explore coast and country, farm land to moor land whilst breathing in some clean, fresh air. There's a different walk and village to explore each day. Looking for inspiration? Then, click this link: walking (northyorkmoors.org.uk).

Some of our favourite walks are to the magnificent waterfalls found in the local area: Mallyan Spout, Hayburn Wyke and Falling Foss. Each one is different and has something quite special about it. If you don't want such a long walk, but still like the idea of seeing water, then Thornton-le-Dale has a tranquil pond area, beck and small waterfall.

If you're a keen geocacher, then there are so many to find locally. The circular walk from Tillers doorstep has plenty of easy finds and you'll find more challenging ones in the local area. Just take a look at the geocaching app for ideas!

So, get your walking boots ready, dress for the weather and enjoy exploring!
